AUTHOR: M.J.
Montenegrin football player, national team goalkeeper Matija Šarkić, died this morning around 6:30 am in Budva.

As the portal RTCG learns, the goalkeeper of the Montenegrin national team fell ill in an apartment in Budva, his friends immediately called an ambulance, but there was no help for him.

Ten days ago, Šarkić delighted the Montenegrin public with his great defenses in the match against Belgium, it seemed that the "brave falcons" had got a goalkeeper for the next decade, but an untimely death got in the way, writes the RTCG portal.

The police are on the scene, all the circumstances are being investigated, but it is most likely a natural death.

As we unofficially learn, Šarkić went for a walk with his friends in Budva last night, had dinner in a restaurant and returned to his apartment early.

When he got up around 6 this morning, he complained that he was sick, which is why his friends called the ambulance, but it was too late...

Matija was born in the English town of Grimsby. The son of Bojan Šarkić, our diplomat, and an English mother, Natali Tod, who works for the European Media Network.

He started his football career in the younger categories of Anderlecht, but quickly moved to Aston Villa.

He was a football player of the famous clubs from Birmingham and Wolverhampton, but he often went to train in teams from the lower ranks of English football.

This season, he became Millwall's first goalkeeper and was one of the best players of the popular "lions", keeping a clean sheet in the last three matches in the Championship.

After playing for the younger categories of our national team, he made his debut for the senior team on November 19, 2019, when, at the invitation of the then coach Faruk Hadžibegić, he stood between the posts in a duel with Belarus, which Montenegro won 2:0.

In total, he collected nine appearances for the "brave falcons" national team, and he was particularly impressive in the last one against Belgium, when he amazed both the domestic and European public with phenomenal interventions.

It seemed that, despite the defeat, we got a lot of goalkeepers for the next 10 years or so, and no one could have guessed that it would be the last time he stood between the posts.

His twin brother Oliver is an offensive midfielder and is one of the most responsible for the historic title of Dečić.

Many citizens deeply affected by the untimely death of young Šarkić are saying goodbye to Šarkić today. Telegrams of condolence were sent by Montenegrin's highest state officials, as well as former president Milo Đukanović. Expressions of condolence are also sent by sports institutions and clubs both in Montenegro and in England, where Šarkić was born and where he gained his first football steps and successes.
