Đurašković: Belvedere's spirit of freedom still lives among us

AUTHOR: M.J.
The place where we are today 88 years ago was the focus of events that shook the foundations of our society, but also strengthened the determination of the Montenegrin people in the fight for freedom, said the mayor of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković.
Representatives of UBNOR Cetinje and Prijestonica Cetinje laid wreaths on the monument to the innocent victims on the Belvedere with the message that Montenegro does not forget its heroes, the hope that something like this will never happen again and the message that they will vigorously resist the attacks on Montenegro, no matter who they come from .
Đurašković, on behalf of the Capital of Cetinje and in his own name, welcomed the commemoration of the Belvedere protests - an event that, as a symbol of resistance and freedom, is woven into the brightest pages of our nation's history.
- Throughout its long and glorious history, Montenegro was the scene of many trials and challenges, but love for the homeland was and remains a force that connects us, inspires and leads us forward. As was often the case in our past, the Belvedere events, the anniversary of which we are celebrating today, originated from that selfless and unwavering devotion to our country, which led and encouraged our heroic fighters to confront numerous challenges and injustices - he said. Đurašković.
That is why, he stated, the Belvedere demonstrations were more than ordinary protests - they were a clear, unequivocal statement of disagreement with the then regime and violent assimilation that threatened to erase the identity and pride of the Montenegrin state and people.
- Despite the pressure, violence and attempts at intimidation, June 26, 1936 was the day when our ancestors stood up against injustice and showed that neither terror nor repression can destroy the libertarian spirit that runs through the veins of every Montenegrin. On that fateful day, six of our compatriots laid down their lives for the ideas of freedom and justice, while many others were wounded and arrested, with the only fault that they guarded the flame of freedom and that they loved Montenegro and its freedom more than their own lives - he added. .
As he says, Montenegro has gone through many challenges since that day, but the libertarian spirit of Belvedere still lives among us.
- Today, when we remember those brave people and their sacrifices, we must not forget that they fought and died to leave us a free and independent country as a legacy, and that it is up to us to preserve that legacy and hand it over to future generations. Finally, this anniversary should remind us of another important thing - that differences in opinions, commitments and political views are necessary and always necessary, because they make our society alive and diverse. However, we must be united in one thing, that Montenegro, its statehood and independence are unconditional and indisputable, and that we must not allow anyone to divide us in that belief - Đurašković told the crowd.
He also expressed his gratitude to the citizens for being here today and together preserving the memory of the heroes, advocating for the values they defended with their lives.
- Let their courage be our guide, and their sacrifice a reminder of how valuable the freedom they fought for is. Eternal glory to the victims of the Belvedere events and eternal glory to Montenegro! - said Đurašković.
