Šehović: Montenegro must continue the European path, resist retrograde worldviews

President of the Social Democrats of Montenegro (SD), Dr. Damir Šehović, congratulated all citizens of Montenegro on the coming year 2024.
"On the threshold of the new calendar year, when we need to summarize the impressions of the outgoing ones, I believe that we will not be wrong if we say that we have no reason to be overly satisfied with what was achieved in the previous year," announced Šehović.
According to him, the year that is coming to an end was marked by tensions on the socio-political scene, internal turmoil, hitherto unseen ostracization of politics and ubiquitous instability, destructive and often anti-systemic actions of the ruling elites, and absolute devaluation of the value system, abandonment of vision, i.e. wandering when making the most important decisions for the state and society as a whole.
"We in the Social Democrats did not turn a blind eye to any of the above. Our action was focused. We pointed out numerous shortcomings, anomalies and omissions. We were even lonely at one time. We criticized and at the same time offered solutions, but always and in every place we were with our citizens, open to all criticism and aware that more and better can always be done", emphasized Šehović.
Šehović emphasized the necessity of strengthening dialogue and trust, in order to overcome challenges.
"Unfortunately, we expect to face many challenges in the year ahead, bearing in mind current events and numerous accumulated unresolved problems. However, only by changing the approach, rising above the party trenches, strengthening dialogue and mutual trust, can we successfully overcome the aforementioned," said Šehović.
He said that Montenegro must continue its European path and return to the values it inherited, and for that, he added, unity, determination and maturity are needed.
"Despite everything, Montenegro must continue its European path, which has been completely blocked for some time due to irresponsible government. It must return to all those values it inherited along the way, in order to achieve the necessary developments. And to achieve that ultimate goal, which implies membership in the European Union, unity, determination and maturity are needed more than ever," said Šehović.
The president of the SD said that the future of the citizens and the state of Montenegro depend a lot on the correctness of the political decisions that will be made.
"That is why it is necessary to resist retrograde worldviews and influences, and to preserve our greatest asset - the civil and multi-ethnic character of the state. Because our differences are not our weakness, but the greatest lasting value that has been left to us as a legacy", said Šehović.
In his congratulatory message, Šehović wished everyone a happy and successful year.
"To all the citizens of Montenegro, as well as to our numerous diaspora around the world, with the best wishes, I congratulate the New Year. Let it be more beautiful, better and more successful than any previous one", concluded Šehović.
