Šehović: With the adoption of the Resolution on Srebrenica, truth and justice won

AUTHOR: M.J.
With the adoption of the Resolution on Srebrenica at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which establishes the International Day of Remembrance for the victims of this terrible crime, the largest and most monstrous of its kind after the Second World War, but also condemns the denial of genocide and the glorification of war criminals, truth and justice won - said Social Democrat leader Damir Šehović.

This, he believes, is the least that the civilized world could do at this moment, faced with its own share of responsibility for failing to prevent it at one time.

- If there is enough statesmanship and wisdom, the region has got an opportunity for political catharsis, but also for a new joint beginning, this time on sound ideological and value foundations. This outcome of the vote in New York restores faith that human values are universal, that they know no borders, and that the moral compass of humanity is still unshakable - stated Šehović.

The irony of fate, he says, is that the biggest promoters of this resolution are precisely those who opposed the Resolution the most.

- Their rather unconvincing resistance and the manipulative narrative that accompanied it only further strengthened the need for such a document, highlighting its critical importance in the fight against revisionism and genocide denial. Although Montenegro, by supporting this resolution, formally remained committed to the Western system of values, to which the majority aspires with full right, a bitter taste remained due to, to put it mildly, the inability of the current government to manage this, not political, but above all ethical issue. Thanks to the demonstrated political immaturity and indecisiveness, which was present from the beginning within, on this issue, the mutually quarreling government, the deep division within the parliamentary majority was exposed - the SD leader stated.

Now, he points out, it is crystal clear that at least half of that majority does not understand that without facing the past, there is no future, and especially, as he said, not the European one - which is full of mouths.

- This kind of government, which is unable to recognize key historical moments, and to respond to them adequately and without cheap daily political calculations, is not sustainable, and even less European. The Social Democrats of Montenegro will continue the fight for truth, justice and European values. We will not give up until we build a society that is founded on a correct progressive worldview. Our vision of Montenegro is clear: a society that does not run away from the past, but faces it, in order to ensure a better, fairer and more prosperous future for everyone - concluded Šehović.
