Changes could question the stability of institutions

Recent political events in Montenegro have caused a deep institutional crisis, disturbed the functionality of democratic institutions in the country and contributed to slowing down access negotiations, the European Foreign Affairs Service (EEAS) said.

“The latest amendments to the Authority on the President are contrary to the opinion of the Venetian Commission. Repeated failure to appoint the members of the Constitutional Court illustrates the inability to build a consensus on reforms, ”said Portparol Peter Stan's statement.

In order to advance to the EU accession, which is the desire of the vast majority of Montenegro citizens, all political actors must support the stability and functionality of democratic institutions, especially the Constitutional Court, to be maintained and to avoid further incidents.

"The political situation that arose as a result of the last actions could question the stability of the institutions," Stan said.

This concern by the European Union is also expressed by the authorities of Montenegro through established diplomatic channels.

The Chief of Montenegro at EU at EU Petar Markovic met with the political director of the European Foreign Affairs, Enrike More (Enrique Mora), and during that meeting, the European official shared the "serious concern of the EU" in connection with the decision of parliament on the authority of the President who is against the recommendations of the Venetian Commission.

"Citizens want EU accession, which means supporting the parties to function of democratic institutions, especially the Constitutional Court," the Mora said.
