DPS: Protect the basic human rights of Veljović and provide him with adequate health care

SOURCE: POBJEDA / M.J.
The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) called on the competent state authorities to adequately deal with Veselin Veljović, the long-time director of the Police Administration of Montenegro, who is currently in custody.
As they said in that party, Veljović's health condition and the inhumane treatment he was subjected to from the first day of his arrest, which included being handcuffed to a bed for several weeks in the Clinical Center of Montenegro, deserve public reaction, first of all, from the aspect of protecting his basic human rights and freedoms.
Given the inadequate treatment that Mr. Veljović is receiving, one can get the impression that his detention was not ordered as a measure to implement criminal proceedings - which should legally be the case, but as a measure of punishment, which is not and should not be the spirit of determining such a measure - it was announced from DPS.
This kind of behavior, they state, violates the presumption of innocence and tries to judge Mr. Veljović even before the court process, which is absolutely unacceptable.
Additionally, in the context of the decisions of the Appellate Court of the previous days, we believe that there is room to consider whether the detention of Mr. Veljović is necessary since he is a proven professional and a man who has spent his entire working life serving the state of Montenegro in the most responsible positions performed, and we are sure that his detention does not satisfy any of the reasons that are the basis for ordering detention - the statement emphasized.
DPS called on the competent state authorities to protect Veljović from persecution and provide him with the fulfillment of his basic human rights, and to stop the inhumane attitude and treatment that individuals from the system, driven, as they say, by personal hatred and abusing their position, have towards him.
