On January 5, 2024, the Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases of the Institute of Public Health (IJZ) of Montenegro registered an increased number of covid-19 cases among the beneficiaries of the Podgorica Old People's Institution.
Illness from covid-19 was laboratory confirmed in 20 persons, while coinfection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was simultaneously proven in five of them. According to the information received from the health service of the Old People's Home, all patients have mild to moderate symptoms of respiratory infection and are currently in good general condition - the IJZ announced.
They add that the Institute for Public Health of Montenegro has started an epidemiological investigation and is conducting increased epidemiological surveillance in the Home, stressing that recommendations for preventing and suppressing the spread of acute infectious respiratory infections among home users and employees have been submitted to the Home Management.
As in previous weeks, on this occasion we also appeal to the residents of Montenegro, especially to vulnerable groups, to be extra careful during holidays and periods of the year when the occurrence of acute infectious respiratory diseases is frequent and to apply general prevention measures in order to reduce the risk of transmission diseases, such as whooping cough, flu, covid-19, infection with RSV and others, on persons with a higher risk of developing more severe forms of the disease - the Institute stated.
In anticipation of the holidays, the Institute for Public Health of Montenegro sent a letter to all health institutions, as well as social and child protection institutions, with a request to maximally improve the implementation of measures for the prevention and suppression of acute infectious respiratory diseases.
Please note that vaccination is the most effective prevention measure. The seasonal flu vaccine is currently available in Montenegro, and we invite everyone who is the target group to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Also, the final procurement procedure of the vaccine against covid-19 with an improved composition (with the XBB strain) is underway, so this vaccine will soon be available to risk groups - concludes the IJZ.
