The citizens of Nikšić blocked the roundabout at the intersection of Partizanski and Hercegovački roads as a sign of protest tonight, around 6:00 p.m.
As previously announced, the protest was organized due to the announcement by the municipal authorities that the names of numerous streets will be renamed. In the previous days, the public expressed clear dissatisfaction with the intention to rename streets whose names are linked to the proud anti-fascist heritage of the city and the country.
Draguti Tule Perović, president of the council of the Rastoci local community, addressed the gathering.
We have gathered to express our dissatisfaction, revolt against the decisions of the Council for proposing the names of violence, streets and squares, from March 10 of this year, which rename the streets. We will not allow the deletion of values left for future generations. Is there anything worse than forgetting? We will not allow anyone, neither the current nor any future government, to rewrite the famous anti-fascist history of the city under Trebjes, but also to desecrate memorials, because street names are memorials - said Perović.
He said that on these streets we grow up, grow together, and identify ourselves.
These streets are us, our fathers, our children. We are telling the committee club For the Future of Nikšić and the President of the Municipality of Nikšić Kovačević to abandon the renaming of Partizanski i Hercegovački Street to Mehmeda Meša Selimović and Ivo Andrić Streets. In the event that our appeal is not heeded, we will be forced to take radical measures - said Perović, among other things.
As he pointed out, these measures would refer to the complete blockade of Partizanski put and Hercegovački put.
Previously, the Council of the Rastoci Local Community of Nikšić expressed public dissatisfaction with the decision on renaming and announced that they will block the streets Partizanski and Hercegovački put in the period from 18:00 to 19:00.
