Today's date is the triumph of freedom-loving Podgorica

SUBNOR of Montenegro and UBNOR of the Capital City marked 78 years since Podgorica was liberated in the Second World War and organized numerous activities and ceremonies on the occasion of this bright holiday.
The president of SOBNOR of Montenegro, Radojica Radojević, pointed out that December 19 is one of the most significant dates in the rich history of this city.
"On this day in 1944, Podgorica was freed from fascism, and this date still radiates as a strong symbol of freedom and the triumph of libertarian Podgorica. Before the year 78, units of the Third Division, the famous NOVJ brigades, i.e. the Ninth Montenegrin National Liberation Brigade, the First Bokeška The People's Liberation Brigade, the Zeta People's Liberation Partisan Detachment, brought the suffering people freedom from the bloodthirsty fascists and their collaborators in the early morning hours of December 19. It was a magnificent date in the history of Sreza Podgorica, especially this suffering and tormented city, which lived to its 72nd anniversary. bombings, and unfortunately mostly from allied aviation, our city and county made a huge contribution to the altar of freedom," said Radojević.
He pointed out that there were about 6,000 active participants in the National Liberation Movement, of which about half were among the fighters of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia.
"About 1,400 fighters gave their lives on the battlefields, shooting ranges, prisons and camps, while several thousand died as victims of fascist terror. The city gave 476 bearers of the "Partisan Memorial 1941". Here, in this period of 1944, blood-soaked freedom was born , created the conditions for a life worthy of man and is the best example of how bravely and proudly one defends one's homeland and its freedom," he said.
He said that their sacrifices were not in vain - "because from their blood sprang the freedom in which we live today".
"Commemorating today the anniversary of the liberation of Podgorica from fascism, it is also an opportunity to express deep respect for all the fighters of our magnificent NOB, for all our ancestors who gave birth to brave and best sons and daughters, who incorporated their youth and gave their lives throughout the former homeland for our future. It is our permanent obligation to never forget those knights and heroes, who laid down their lives for the freedom of Montenegro, our city and our former homeland from Triglav to Đevđelija, those who, in those times of war, had courage , determination and strength to stand up to that evil and to eventually overcome it. We owe the freedom we have today to those victims and their courage, and for that reason, even today, we offer our deepest thanks. I invite young people to follow their honorable path and continue their magnificent work. May eternal glory and thanks be to the fallen fighters for the freedom of our country and this city," said Radojević.
