Trump, without any evidence, accused Harris of paying people to attend her rallies and then went on to make outlandish remarks about immigrants, claiming they eat the pets of American citizens.
"They eat dogs in Springfield, the people who came here eat the cats. They eat the pets of the people who live there," Trump said, clearly upset.
This moment, according to many users of social networks, marked a turning point in the debate, while Harris remained composed, avoiding being drawn into the controversy.
His claims about immigrants reportedly stem from a viral video in which a Springfield, Ohio resident claims before the city council that immigrants killed ducks from a local park for food. This unconfirmed video quickly spread in right-wing circles and soon became a meme, in which AI-generated images of Trump surrounded by cats and dogs are used to portray him as a pet protector.
