Trump threatens to withdraw from the debate with Harris, her team presented a new demand

AUTHOR: M.J.-VOA

The campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris clashed over the upcoming presidential debate scheduled to take place in September on ABC television. Namely, the Democratic team demanded that the candidates' microphones remain on during the entire debate, while the Republican candidate threatens to withdraw from the debate and says that ABC television is biased - even though he previously agreed to participate in the duel there.

"Why would I debate Kamala Harris on that TV?" Trump wrote on social media, suggesting ABC's "bias."

A spokesman for the Kamala Harris campaign, Brian Fallon, said their request was that the candidates' microphones be turned on at all times during the debate, and not be turned off when their time to speak is up, as was the case in the first debate, reports Reuters. So-called "hot microphones" can help or harm political candidates, because they catch everything they say, even what is not intended for the public.

"The vice president is ready to deal with Trump's constant lies and interruptions in real time. Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button," Fallon said in a statement.

Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz will travel by bus through several cities in the state of Georgia, culminating in a rally in Savannah on Thursday.

Biden won Georgia in 2020 and it was the first time since 1992 that the Democrats won the state. It will be Kamala Harris' seventh time in Georgia, and second time in Savannah.

Public opinion polls show that Harris has a narrow lead over Trump at the national level of 2 to 3 percent, and after the Democratic National Convention, her approval rating could increase further.

The states where Harris and Trump will be campaigning this week, along with North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada, are crucial. Early voting in some of the most important states starts already in the second half of September.

Seven states decide the US election, because victory does not depend on the total number of votes at the level of the entire US.

The elections are actually a competition between two candidates in all 50 states, and the electors of the winning team (except in two federal states) then cast their vote in the Electoral College, which elects the president. Electoral College votes are based on population, meaning the most populous states provide the most electors.

In swing states, opinion polls show the race is tight and uncertain. Washington Post polls show that Harris has a slight lead in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, while Trump leads in the rest of the key states.

Trump lost the national popular vote in 2016, but won it thanks to the Electoral College.

Kamala Harris' campaign said it has raised $540 million, most of which will be spent on marketing in key states. Trump also raised large campaign funds, but less than Harris - about $327 million.
