White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savit said today that US President Joseph Biden is "closely following events in Israel and Lebanon".
"He was engaged throughout the evening with his national security team," Savit said, according to The Times of Israel.
He stated that, at the behest of Biden, high-ranking American officials are in continuous communication with Israeli partners.
"We will continue to support Israel's right to self-defense and we will continue to work for regional stability," Savit pointed out.
The Lebanese group Hezbollah announced this morning that it had launched an attack on Israel in response to the killing of the group's top commander Fuad Shukra last month, hitting 11 Israeli military sites.
Hezbollah later announced that the "first phase" of the attack on Israel had been completed and that more than 320 rockets and a large number of drones had been fired at targets in northern Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant announced that he had declared a state of emergency, and Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said dozens of Israeli warplanes were now attacking targets in various areas of southern Lebanon.
